Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. 85% of Malawi's population live in rural areas where only around 1% have electricity. Lack of energy services affect all aspects of people's lives and livelihoods.
Kuwala Energy is a Malawian last mile distribution business delivering affordable and reliable Solar Home Energy Systems to off-grid households in Northern Malawi.
The business is youth and women led with an immediate focus on the Nkhata Bay District but with a long term goal of expanding operations to the entire Northern Region.
Solar-Maji - "Pay as you grow" solar Irrigation business in Northern Malawi
Malawi’s economy is predominantly agricultural by labour force (almost 90%), and it contributes over two thirds of GDP. Agriculture generates around 90% of Malawi's foreign exchange earnings from cash crop exports including tobacco, sugar, tea, and cotton. Maize is the principal subsistence crop.
Currently agricultural production is largely dependent on rainfall, as capital intensive irrigation is out of reach for most farmers for reasons of cost. This project aims to provide smallholders with access to solar powered irrigation technology as well as agricultural support services and access to market.
